Tick-Borne Encephalitis Vaccine in Hounslow

What Is Tick-Borne Encephalitis?

Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection of the brain caused by the TBE virus, transmitted primarily through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks (the same tick species that transmits Lyme disease). In rare cases, it can also be acquired through consuming unpasteurised dairy products from infected animals.

TBE is found across a wide belt of forested areas stretching from Central Europe through Russia to Japan. The risk is highest between April and November, when ticks are most active. The disease causes a flu-like illness that, in around 20–30% of symptomatic cases, progresses to severe encephalitis (brain inflammation), meningitis, or myelitis. There is no specific antiviral treatment — supportive care is the only option once the disease takes hold. Prevention through vaccination and tick avoidance is therefore essential for at-risk travellers.

The TBE risk in Europe has been growing in recent years, with range expansion into higher altitudes and more northerly latitudes, including parts of the UK, attributed to changing climate and deer population dynamics.

Do I Need the TBE Vaccine?

TBE vaccine is recommended for travellers who plan to spend time in forested, rural, or agricultural areas of endemic countries. Key risk groups include:

  • Hikers, campers, and cyclists in the forests of Central and Eastern Europe or Scandinavia
  • Those undertaking adventure sports (trail running, mountain biking, wild swimming) in endemic areas
  • Travellers staying in rural cottages or forest cabins between April and November
  • Fieldworkers, forestry workers, and researchers spending time outdoors in endemic regions
  • Families travelling to endemic areas with children who play outdoors

Urban tourists visiting major cities are at very low risk and generally do not require vaccination.

When Should I Get Vaccinated?

Start the vaccination course at least 4–6 weeks before travel. The accelerated schedule can be completed in 28 days, but the earlier you begin, the better. If you plan to travel to endemic areas regularly, completing the full 3-dose primary course and maintaining boosters provides long-term protection.

How Many Doses Do I Need?

For travellers, an accelerated 3-dose primary schedule is used: doses at day 0, day 14, and day 28 (or at months 5–12 for the conventional schedule). A booster dose is recommended 3 years after the primary course for ongoing protection. Repeat boosters are needed every 3–5 years thereafter for those remaining at risk.

Side Effects of the TBE Vaccine

The TBE vaccine is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include localised soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, along with headache, muscle aches, and mild fatigue — typically resolving within 1–2 days. A low-grade fever may occur, particularly after the first dose. Serious allergic reactions are very rare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the TBE vaccine for a European holiday? ▾
It depends on your destination and activities. TBE vaccine is recommended for travellers to forested areas of Central and Eastern Europe and Scandinavia who will be hiking, camping, or spending time outdoors between April and November. Urban tourists and beach holidaymakers are at low risk.
Which areas have a risk of Tick-Borne Encephalitis? ▾
TBE is found across a broad swathe of forested Europe and Asia. Your pharmacist can advise on the risk level for your specific destination.
How many doses of the TBE vaccine do I need? ▾
For travellers, an accelerated 3-dose schedule is available: doses on day 0, day 14, and day 28 (or months 5–12). This provides good protection before travel. A booster after 3 years is recommended for ongoing protection.
Can I just use tick repellent instead of the vaccine? ▾
Tick repellents (DEET-based sprays) and protective clothing are important complements to vaccination, but they do not replace it. Ticks are very small and can be missed. Vaccine and repellent together offer the best protection.
