Antimalarials in Hounslow — Malaria Tablets & Travel Advice

What Is Malaria?

Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The malaria parasite (Plasmodium) enters the bloodstream and infects red blood cells, causing symptoms including high fever, chills, sweating, headache, nausea, vomiting, and muscle pain. In severe cases — particularly with Plasmodium falciparum, the most dangerous species — malaria can cause organ failure, cerebral malaria, and death.

Malaria kills over 600,000 people annually worldwide, with the vast majority of deaths occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. However, it remains a very real risk for travellers from the UK visiting malaria-endemic regions, who have no natural immunity to the parasite. With the right precautions — including appropriate antimalarial medication — malaria is preventable.

Do I Need Antimalarials?

Antimalarials are strongly recommended for travel to malaria-endemic areas. The main risk zones include:

  • West and Central Africa — the highest-risk region
  • East Africa — including popular safari and coastal destinations
  • South Asia — particularly rural and northern areas
  • Southeast Asia — particularly rural and forested areas
  • South America — particularly the Amazon basin

Risk levels vary considerably by specific location within each region, season, and altitude. Urban areas and major tourist destinations often have lower risk than rural and jungle areas. Our pharmacists will assess the precise risk for your itinerary during your consultation.

When Should I Start Taking Antimalarials?

The start date depends on the specific medication:

  • Malarone (atovaquone-proguanil) — start 1–2 days before entering a malaria zone; continue for 7 days after leaving
  • Doxycycline — start 2 days before entering a malaria zone; continue for 4 weeks after leaving
  • Mefloquine (Lariam) — start 2–3 weeks before entering a malaria zone (to check for tolerability); continue for 4 weeks after leaving

Book your malaria consultation as early as possible — especially if mefloquine may be considered, as the extended pre-travel start period requires advance planning.

Which Antimalarial Should I Take?

There is no single "best" antimalarial for all travellers. The choice depends on:

  • Your specific destination and the type of malaria parasite present
  • The duration of your trip
  • Your medical history, current medications, and any allergies
  • Your ability to tolerate sun exposure (relevant for doxycycline)
  • Any history of psychiatric conditions (relevant for mefloquine)
  • Cost and convenience preferences

At Hounslow Travel Clinic, our pharmacist prescribers will work through all these factors with you and recommend the most suitable option. We provide clear instructions on how to take your medication correctly.

Other Malaria Prevention Measures

Antimalarials are very effective but should be used alongside other protective measures — known as the ABCD approach:

  • Awareness of the risk in your destination
  • Bite prevention — use DEET-based insect repellent, wear long-sleeved clothing in the evenings, sleep under a mosquito net (preferably insecticide-treated)
  • Chemoprophylaxis — take your prescribed antimalarial medication correctly
  • Diagnosis — seek medical attention promptly if you develop fever during or after travel to a malaria-risk area

Frequently Asked Questions

Which antimalarial is best for me? ▾
The right antimalarial depends on your destination, length of stay, medical history, and any medications you are already taking. Doxycycline is the most commonly prescribed and is suitable for most destinations. Malarone (atovaquone-proguanil) is effective with fewer side effects for some travellers. Mefloquine (Lariam) is taken weekly but is not suitable for everyone. Our pharmacists will assess your individual circumstances and recommend the most appropriate option.
Do I need a prescription for antimalarials? ▾
Yes — antimalarials are prescription-only medications in the UK. At Hounslow Travel Clinic, our pharmacist prescribers can assess and prescribe antimalarials as part of your travel health consultation, with no need to visit your GP separately.
How much do antimalarials cost? ▾
The consultation fee starts from £25. Medication costs vary by type and duration: Doxycycline is the most affordable option (from around £1–2 per day), while Malarone costs more (from around £2.50–3.50 per day). We will provide a full cost breakdown at your consultation.
How long before travel do I need to start taking antimalarials? ▾
This depends on which medication you are prescribed. Malarone is started 1–2 days before travel. Doxycycline is started 2 days before travel. Mefloquine must be started 2–3 weeks before travel to check for side effects. All antimalarials should be continued for a period after leaving the malaria zone.
Are there side effects with antimalarials? ▾
All antimalarials can cause side effects in some people. Doxycycline can cause photosensitivity (sun sensitivity) and nausea — taking it with food and using high-factor sun cream helps. Malarone is generally well tolerated. Mefloquine has been associated with neuropsychiatric side effects in some patients and is not recommended for everyone. Our pharmacists will discuss the options fully so you can make an informed choice.
