Diphtheria, Tetanus & Polio (DTP) Vaccine in Hounslow
What Are Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio?
These three serious bacterial and viral diseases are covered by a single combined booster vaccine (Td/IPV, brand name Revaxis).
Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that can cause a thick membrane to form in the throat, leading to breathing difficulties and potentially life-threatening complications. It is spread through respiratory droplets and remains prevalent in parts of Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and South America.
Tetanus (lockjaw) is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which produces a toxin that causes severe muscle spasms. It enters the body through cuts and wounds and is found worldwide in soil. Tetanus can be fatal without prompt treatment.
Polio (poliomyelitis) is a viral infection that can cause paralysis. Although global polio eradication efforts have been highly successful, the disease persists in a small number of countries, and travellers to affected regions must be protected.
Do I Need the DTP Booster?
A DTP booster is recommended for travellers who:
- Have not had a booster in the past 10 years
- Are travelling to parts of Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, or South America where diphtheria, tetanus, or polio risk is higher than in the UK
- Are travelling to regions where wild poliovirus remains in circulation
- Have not completed their full childhood vaccination schedule
- Work in healthcare, disaster relief, or with children in endemic areas
Many adults are unaware that their childhood vaccines have long since lapsed. A quick review of your vaccination history at your travel health consultation can identify any gaps — contact us to book.
When Should I Get Vaccinated?
At any point before travel is fine — a single injection provides rapid protection. Ideally at least 2 weeks before departure. The DTP booster can often be given in the same appointment as other travel vaccines, making it very convenient to catch up on missed boosters.
How Many Doses Do I Need?
For most adults, a single booster injection is all that is needed to top up existing immunity acquired through the childhood vaccination programme. If you have never been vaccinated, or if your vaccination history is unknown, a primary course may be required — our pharmacists will advise after reviewing your records.
Side Effects of the DTP Booster
Side effects are mild and brief. Soreness and redness at the injection site are most common. Occasionally people notice mild headache or fatigue in the day following vaccination. Serious reactions are extremely rare.
