Hajj & Umrah Vaccines in Hounslow
Vaccination Requirements for Hajj and Umrah
Every year, millions of Muslim pilgrims from around the world travel to Mecca and Medina for Hajj and Umrah. The sheer density of people from diverse countries makes large pilgrimages one of the highest-risk settings for infectious disease transmission. The Saudi Arabian government has therefore established mandatory vaccination requirements to protect pilgrims and the communities they return to.
Hounslow has one of the largest Muslim communities in Greater London, and each year many local residents travel to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. Our clinic is experienced in providing all required and recommended vaccines for pilgrims, along with the official documentation needed for visa applications.
Required Vaccine: Meningitis ACWY
The Saudi government mandates Meningitis ACWY vaccination for all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, regardless of nationality. This requirement stems from outbreaks of meningococcal disease linked to mass gatherings in Mecca in the late 1990s and 2000s. Vaccination must be given at least 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia, and proof of vaccination (an official certificate) is required.
At Hounslow Travel Clinic, we administer the Meningitis ACWY conjugate vaccine and provide the stamped vaccination certificate you need for your visa application and travel documentation.
Recommended Vaccines for Hajj and Umrah
In addition to the mandatory Meningitis ACWY vaccine, the following are strongly recommended for most pilgrims:
- Influenza — upper respiratory infections are extremely common during Hajj due to the density of crowds. Flu vaccination significantly reduces risk.
- Hepatitis A — recommended for travellers to Saudi Arabia, particularly those eating street food or travelling outside hotels.
- Typhoid — recommended for pilgrims who may eat food prepared outside of large hotels or who have not previously been vaccinated.
- Pneumococcal vaccine — recommended for elderly pilgrims and those with underlying health conditions such as heart, lung, or kidney disease, or diabetes.
- COVID-19 — ensure your COVID-19 vaccinations are up to date before travel. Saudi Arabia has periodically updated entry requirements.
Pilgrims with existing medical conditions should also consult their GP before travel to ensure they are fit for the physical demands of the pilgrimage and to obtain adequate supplies of any regular medications.
When Should I Get Vaccinated Before Hajj or Umrah?
Book your vaccination appointment as early as possible — ideally 6–8 weeks before your departure date. This allows time to complete courses that require multiple doses (such as Hepatitis A, if you are getting the booster schedule) and ensures the mandatory Meningitis ACWY certificate is issued well in advance. Demand for Hajj-related vaccinations peaks in the months before the Hajj season — do not leave it too late.
How Many Vaccines Do I Need?
The number and type of vaccines depends on your vaccination history and individual health status. During your consultation at Hounslow Travel Clinic, our pharmacists will review your records and recommend the appropriate vaccines for your trip. In most cases, all necessary vaccines can be administered in a single visit.
Side Effects
Each vaccine has its own side effect profile, but all are generally mild — soreness at the injection site, mild fever, and fatigue are the most common. Our pharmacists will brief you fully before each vaccination. Serious reactions are very rare.
