HPV Vaccination in Hounslow

What Is HPV?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is an extremely common virus — most sexually active people will be infected with at least one HPV strain at some point in their lives. There are over 200 known strains of HPV, most of which are harmless and clear on their own. However, certain high-risk strains can cause cancers, and low-risk strains can cause genital warts.

HPV is responsible for virtually all cases of cervical cancer, as well as a significant proportion of cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus, and throat (oropharynx). In the UK, around 3,200 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year, and HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers are increasing. Gardasil 9 — the vaccine we use — protects against 9 HPV strains responsible for approximately 90% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts.

Do I Need the HPV Vaccine?

HPV vaccination is most effective when given before first sexual exposure to the virus, which is why the NHS targets 11–13 year olds through the school programme. However, adults who missed the school programme can still benefit from vaccination, as most adults are unlikely to have been exposed to all 9 strains covered by Gardasil 9.

Consider the HPV vaccine if you:

  • Did not receive the HPV vaccine through school and are aged under 45
  • Are a man who has sex with men (MSM) — the NHS does offer catch-up vaccination to MSM up to age 45 through sexual health clinics, but private vaccination is also available
  • Are seeking additional protection for peace of mind
  • Are a parent considering privately vaccinating a child who missed the school programme

When Should I Get Vaccinated?

As early as possible for maximum benefit, ideally before becoming sexually active. However, the vaccine is still beneficial for sexually active adults who may not have been exposed to all 9 strains covered by Gardasil 9. Book a consultation and our pharmacists can advise on your individual situation.

How Many Doses Do I Need?

The number of doses depends on your age at first vaccination. Those who receive their first dose under the age of 15 need 2 doses, given 6–24 months apart. Those aged 15 and over at first vaccination need 3 doses, given at 0, 2, and 6 months. Our pharmacists will confirm the correct schedule at your appointment.

Side Effects of the HPV Vaccine

Gardasil 9 is well tolerated. Common side effects include soreness, redness, or mild swelling at the injection site, and occasionally a mild headache. Dizziness or fainting (vasovagal) can occur shortly after vaccination, so patients are asked to sit quietly for 15 minutes afterwards. Serious allergic reactions are very rare.

HPV Vaccine Price in Hounslow

Gardasil 9 is available at Hounslow Travel Clinic from £175 per dose. As most adults require 3 doses, the full course costs from £525.

Is there an age limit for the HPV vaccine? ▾
Gardasil 9 is licensed for use in individuals aged 9–45. Adults over 45 should discuss with a clinician whether vaccination is appropriate for them. Our pharmacists will advise based on your individual circumstances.

Does the HPV vaccine protect men as well as women? ▾
